Ring Resizing Guide

Ring Resizing Guide

A well-fitting ring should feel effortless. It should sit comfortably, stay secure, and reflect the beauty of its design without compromise. At Maynooth Jewellers, our expert goldsmiths offer professional ring resizing services to help your favourite pieces fit perfectly. However, not every ring can be adjusted, and each design has its own limitations. This guide covers everything you need to know about when resizing is possible, when it isn’t, and the alternatives available.

Why Ring Resizing Matters

A ring that fits correctly isn’t just more comfortable, it’s more secure. Resizing helps ensure your ring stays where it should while preserving the integrity of its structure and stones.

Professional resizing allows us to balance your comfort with the long-term durability of your jewellery. That said, not all rings or metals are suitable for alteration, and some styles require extra care. When resizing isn’t possible, we offer tailored alternatives to keep your ring wearable and safe.

Rings That Can’t Be Resized (or Have Limits)

Whether a ring can be resized depends on its structure, metal, and design details. Here are some common examples:

Rings with Solid Shoulders & Court Wedding Bands

These classic styles are usually safe to resize up or down by approximately two sizes. Beyond that, the structure may be compromised.

Micro Diamond Set Rings

We avoid resizing micro-set diamond rings, as the process can disturb the tiny stones and weaken their settings.

Stone-Set Shoulders & Half-Eternity Rings

These can sometimes be resized, but only within a narrow range. Typically, we recommend staying within two sizes to prevent disturbing surrounding stones.

Patterned or Bevelled Edge Rings

Resizing may distort the pattern or bevel, changing the overall appearance of the ring.

Full Eternity Rings

Eternity rings with stones set all the way around cannot be resized due to the continuous setting.

Material Matters – How Metals Affect Resizing

Different metals react differently during the resizing process:

Silver & Yellow Gold

Softer metals that are generally easy to resize.

Platinum

Requires specialist tools and laser technology due to its high melting point. Lasering ensures a clean, seamless finish.

White Gold

After resizing, the ring must be rhodium-plated again to restore its bright white shine.

Rose Gold

More prone to cracking because of its copper content, making resizing more challenging.

Stainless Steel, Titanium & Tungsten

Extremely hard metals that cannot be safely resized.

Alternatives When Resizing Isn’t Possible

If your ring can’t be resized, don’t worry - we offer several comfortable and practical solutions:

Sizing Beads

Small beads fitted inside the band to slightly reduce the size without permanent changes.

Ring Clips

Removable inserts that help tighten the fit. Ideal for temporary adjustments or fluctuating finger sizes.

Remounting

For larger size changes, we can remount your stones into a new ring or setting. This is a popular option for solitaire and three-stone rings.

Special Orders & Client-Owned Rings

Special Orders

If your dream ring isn’t available in your size and cannot be resized, we can order a new one made specifically for you.

Resizing Your Own Ring

We inspect every client-owned ring before resizing. Our jeweller checks for:

• Wear and thinning
• Previous repairs
• Weak stone settings
• Structural issues

Only once we confirm it’s safe will we proceed with a resize.

How Ring Resizing Works

Resizing Up

For small adjustments, we may gently stretch the band. For larger increases, we add metal to the ring, then polish it to make the join invisible.

Resizing Down

A small piece of the band is removed, and the ring is soldered back together before being polished to perfection.
